Still pinching myself after last night’s thrilling 5-1 wild card win over the Texas Rangers. In retrospect, who could have seen this coming? A look at the record of Buck Showalter in his second season of taking over bad teams, and the answer is “everyone”. Buck has the O’s 24 games better than last year and that’s quite consistent with his prior record as manager of the Yanks, Rangers, and D-backs.
The manner in which this club keeps winning is incredible. Buoyed by homers and relief pitching all year, the O’s went small ball last night and bunted, stole bases, moved the runners along and didn’t hit a single homer. The formula of getting to the bullpen tied or ahead played out again with Darren O’Day and Jim Johnson making the lead hold up. The O’s were a MLB best 74-0 this year when leading after seven innings, and they held true to form against Texas.
